Social Media Specialist

Freelance / contract | Remote | $1,500 to $2,000 per month, commensurate with experience

The organization

Unseen exists to accelerate the fight against human trafficking and its root causes. Trafficking is a pervasive, profitable industry with significant resources behind it; Unseen and its partners are the opposing force. Because we believe the people closest to the problem are closest to the solution, our method is strengthening the trusted local organizations already on the frontline, 38 partners in 26 countries who served 119,835 people in 2025, so they can do more of the work they already do brilliantly, faster.

The role

We're seeking a freelance Social Media Specialist to own day-to-day content, publishing, and community engagement across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn. You'll turn an established brand system, a rich partner photo library, and clear creative direction into consistent, on-brand storytelling. We don't tell trafficking stories; we tell possibility stories.

Reporting structure

  • Reports to the COO for annual planning, performance data, and metrics reporting (monthly analytics meeting).
  • Reports to the Creative Director for design direction and messaging sign-off (weekly/monthly check-ins).
  • A brief weekly report on posting activity and engagement is expected.

Weekly deliverables

  • Write, edit, and publish posts across Facebook, Instagram, and LinkedIn on a consistent, agreed-upon cadence.
  • Monitor and respond to comments, messages, and audience feedback in a timely, on-brand manner.
  • Submit a brief weekly report on posting activity and engagement.

Ongoing deliverables

  • Work from images and video supplied by Unseen and its partner organizations, following partner photo-use permissions; source free stock imagery when needed.
  • Maintain and execute a social media content calendar aligned with Unseen's goals, including the monthly Defender engagement rhythm (proof, continuation, gratitude).
  • Own outcome-based goals: posting cadence consistency and follower growth targets, set collaboratively each period.
  • Oversee account-level presentation: profile details, cover images, and layout consistency across platforms.
  • Create, curate, and write content following ethical storytelling principles (Unseen's Writing Tip Sheet and ethicalstorytelling.com) for all survivor-adjacent content.
  • Coordinate with the Creative Director to ensure brand and message consistency.

Comments and community

  • Actively monitor comments and messages across all three platforms.
  • Respond to questions and engagement in a timely, professional, on-brand manner.
  • Flag sensitive, hostile, or crisis-adjacent comments to the appropriate internal contact rather than responding independently.

Minimum qualifications

  • 3 to 5 years of experience managing social media for an organization or brand.
  • Demonstrated experience writing marketing and brand copy, and producing engaging visual content from supplied or sourced assets.
  • Can provide a portfolio or examples of social content/accounts you've managed.
  • Experience running a content calendar and delivering scheduled content plans on time and to specification.
  • Experience engaging with followers and responding to queries with a positive, calm, professional style.
  • Ability to tailor messaging thoughtfully to distinct audiences.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, self-motivated; works independently and collaboratively.

Preferred qualifications

  • Nonprofit or anti-trafficking sector experience.
  • Social account design experience (profile presentation, cover imagery, layout consistency).
  • Experience sourcing free or licensed stock imagery.
  • Experience converting social followers into deeper engagement, such as email subscribers.
